Starting Seeds for a Tower Garden

Supplies

  • Rock wool starter plugs
  • Plastic container
  • Seeds
  • Plant labels
  • Vermiculite
  • Grow light or space on a sunny window sill
  • Sharpened pencil
  1. Place rock wool in a plastic planting container.
  2. Water rock wool. There should be about ¼ inch of water in the bottom of the container.
  3. Use the tip of a pencil to open the holes in the top of the rock wool.
  4. Put 2-3 seeds in each hole.
  5. Label each seed or group of the same seeds with the name of the plant and the date.
  6. Use the eraser of the pencil to push the seeds into the hole. They do not need to be very deep.
  7. Cover each hole with a small layer of vermiculite.
  8. Gently water the seeds.
  9. Place in a warm, sunny location or under a grow light.
  10. Check daily and maintain ¼-inch of water in the container to ensure seeds do not dry out.
  11. Seedlings are ready to transfer when they have their first set of true leaves.
