STEM Training Lab
Part of the newsletter series, “What can PHHI do for you?”
At NC State University Plants for Human Health Institute (PHHI), we believe the best way to inspire the next generation of scientists, innovators and problem-solvers is through hands-on discovery. However, as former classroom teachers, we recognize that not all schools or teachers have access to the resources needed for lab-based investigations. That’s why we outfitted a dedicated lab space at PHHI as the STEM Training Lab—a place where science comes alive for students, teachers and the community.

The STEM Training Lab is a state-of-the-art learning space designed to connect classrooms with real-world research and health sciences. From nutrition and plant biology to biotechnology and food innovation, the lab gives students and teachers an opportunity to explore research techniques used to discover how plants can improve human health.
In the STEM Training Lab, students use real laboratory equipment practicing skills such as micropipetting, exploring techniques like gel electrophoresis and ELISA—plus many more exciting experiments.

The lab accommodates up to 30 students at a time, ensuring each participant has plenty of space for hands-on learning. While the lab is equipped as a safe place for students, the ability to follow directions and respect the lab equipment is a must. Groups are limited to 3rd grade and up. Training Lab sessions range from 45 minutes to a full day. For a full list of available activities, visit our website.
The Training Lab isn’t just for students—teachers love it too! Educators can schedule half-day or full-day professional development sessions to gain confidence using lab equipment, learn how to run experiments and even borrow lab tools for classroom use. This makes it possible to bring engaging science experiences to an entire grade level, even when a campus visit isn’t feasible.

The STEM Training Lab opens the door to meaningful, hands-on science for students and teachers alike. Whether you’re looking to spark curiosity in your classroom or grow your own confidence as an educator, PHHI is here to support you. Join us in cultivating the next generation of scientific thinkers and problem-solvers.
